The economic benefit of hydroelectric power depends directly
on the source of flowing water and the topography of the area
where hydroelectric turbines will be installed. For remote
locations where power is needed, hydroelectric turbines practically
have an economic advantage over gas or coal systems. If a
hydroelectric station does have access to a national power
grid, current generated via hydro can supplement the grid
during peak power demand periods.
The economic benefits of hydroelectric power are favorable
in comparison to other power systems by the low maintenance
and operational requirements of hydroelectric systems. Even
more importantly, hydroelectric power protects the environment,
and, is a renewable energy resource. The water used to generate
power is returned to the natural environment after power generation,
and, is returned to the environment at the same temperature
before it was used to generate power. Because no oil or grease
comes into contact with the water in generating power, the
water is not contaminated. Moreover, because hydroelectric
power does not use coal or gas, there are none of the emissions
that are associated with gas and coal systems.
